The Queen's Fool

This book had my immediate interest at the word 'Tudor' (two other Tudor-based books are featured earlier in this blog) and just look at this lovely illustrated cover! I have also seen the two paintings in person that inspired this story.

The narrative is told alternately from the points of view of Cat and Jacques who find themselves (and their monkey) caught up in the Tudor court of King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. We experience both English and French historical events through their eyes as their own searches ultimately lead to uncovering a treasonous plot too...

However, this story is not just about historical context, but about perception in general. Cat has learning difficulties, is often misunderstood and mocked. As Jacques explains: "She's not witless... she is different, that is all."

Cat herself knows what she loves and is brave and talented. I love her description of the Queen's ladies: "They are like chooks running after her for seed and pecking each other out of the way." She is very perceptive in her own way.

At a crucial point in the story, Queen Catherine does listens to and help Cat when no-one else does... and this leads to big discoveries!

In this book there is intrigue, a mystery to be solved, adventure and tense rescues - all set amongst Tudor historical figures. It is about friendship, perseverance and listening. It is a thought-provoking and gripping read. And I love the monkey!
