The Night Before Christmas in Wonderland

By Carys Bexington and Kate Hindley

Published by Macmillan

Ages 4 and upwards

This cover is so stunning and shiny, Christmas-coloured, detailed and filled with beautiful illustrations! This book is exciting and charming from the first glance...

It is written in the style of the original poem, but this story starts with a letter from the young Princess of Hearts all the way over in Wonderland, so St Nick and his reindeer fly off to help. The journey to Wonderland includes this brilliant line:

'It's a quick trip by rabbit hole, AGES by sleigh.'

There they meet all the characters of Wonderland while trying to give the now grown and angry Queen of Hearts a present. But has she been bad or good? Will she get what she truly wants?

Children will need to know the Alice story to understand this one - but it is delightful, with a lovely moral too of learning to be good.

I love the detailed drawings - especially the fur on the reindeer, cat, bandersnatch and the little mouse in the teapot!

This is my favourite Christmas picture book this year. The story, rhyme, drawings, details and tie-in with Alice gives it such quality - truly wonderful!
